Mr RG BRI March 2016:

“To whom it may concern,

I am writing this letter to you as a letter of commendation regarding Mr Mann and his fantastic team.

In June 2015, a day after my 28th birthday I had surgery to remove the bunion's on both of my feet, by all accounts an unusual occarance in a young male, and an equally rare occurance to have them both operated on at the same time due to the crippling after effects of the operation.

This surgery was something I had worried about and put off for years previously, but I could no longer avoid having the operation without causing further damage to my other toes.

From the word go Mr Mann and all of his team were extremely professional and put me at ease immediately. The surgery and possible after effects were outlined to me clearly in my initial consultation and the possible risks of the surgery were also disclosed. I could tell how passionately Mr Mann took his work and this gave me great comfort at a nervous time.

On the day of the operation I was given my own room in the pre op ward and I had been seen by the anaesthetist by 7 30am. The procedure before the operation was explained in detail, and although I was obviously nervous this gave me great comfort knowing what to expect.

I was taken to theatre by 830 and was put to sleep shortly after.

When I woke after the 5 hour operation I was expecting to be in a lot of pain as every person I had spoken to that had had the surgery previously told me it was the most excruciating pain they had ever felt.  Thanks to the numbing blocks that I had been administered by the anesthetist I felt absolutely no pain whatsoever for nearly 24 hours after the operation, and even after this period the pain was mild at worst. The ward staff took fantastic care of me and tended to all of my needs and the following evening I was allowed to go home.

I would spend the following 8 weeks hobbling around on crutches with both feet on the heel platforms, during which time my dressings were changed and cleaned whenever necessary.

When the time finally came to have my dressings taken off the transformation of my feet was unbelievable!! Except for a very slight over correction on one foot (which I could tell Mr Mann was very critical of) my toes were perfectly straight.

I would just like to thank Mr Mann and all of his staff for their fantastic service, I am over the moon with the results and I would like them all to know that just over 6 months after the surgery I completed a fell run of the Yorkshire 3 peaks! A marathon distance run involving 3 individual mountains in a time of 5 hours. After only 6 months this is surely a testament to the quality of the surgery that Mr Mann performed and I doubt I could have done it with the condition of my feet previously.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank them once again for all their hard work, it is much appreciated.

Yours faithfully,

Ryan Gill.”

Mrs L, Spire Leeds 2015 following hallux valgus (bunion) corrections:

“I would like to leave the biggest recommendation for the most amazing doctor Christopher Mann who was my consultant and then a surgeon twice this year.

I had my both feet done and the whole care and recovery afterwards has been superb.

Dr C.Mann took me through this experience in the most professional and helpful manner, even spoke to me while operating my feet and explaining the process in more detail.

……
Thank you so much for changing my life for better...I can finally after 15 years go to the beach or swimming pool without people staring at me, walk through mountain tops without any pain. To top it all up I have a little 11 month old son and I can teach him how to swim!
I will be forever thankful for that.
You have changed my life for better.”

“I've just seen my orthotist, and he is amazed at the change in my foot, and kept telling me how remarkable it was. He said I obviously had a brilliant surgeon- Mr L, private patient Leeds 2016”

Mrs KL Spire 2015;

“I would like to thank the amazing staff who looked after me during both of my operations this year, especially Mr Mann who is an excellent surgeon and consultant. From day one I was fully informed about the procedures and after care. I was reassured every step of the way and am absolutely thrilled at the results so far. I also would like to mention the anesthetists who ensured I was pain free! I cannot express enough my gratitude to Mr Mann and only wish I had taken the plunge sooner to have the surgery!

On ‘toplocalplaces.com”:

"I would like to express my absolute delight and appreciation for the care I have received from the wonderful staff at the Spire Leeds Hospital.  After many years of pain and discomfort, I finally decided to go ahead with the removal of a bunion on my right foot, despite the unpleasant stories I was told about the operation. My first appointment with Mr Chris Mann was both informative and reassuring, explaining the whole procedure and recovery process.  This enabled me to fully understand and prepare myself with realistic expectations.

On the day of the operation, I couldn't have wished for a better team of staff.  Everyone helped me to feel at ease and once again, everything was explained to me.  The anaesthetist and his team were superb too and I would highly recommend the nerve block I was given as it clearly delayed any discomfort I experienced for 24 hours! The follow up call was also very much appreciated.

At this stage in my recovery (4 weeks on), I have had extremely little pain or discomfort.  Mr Mann has done what I thought would be impossible in giving me a straight toe - something I have not had for almost 18 years!  I am now excited to see and feel the results of Mr Mann's incredible skill at the end of this recovery period as it will make a huge difference to my life.

BRI:

“Mr W

Dear Sir Madam I was admitted today under the care of Mr Mann for an operation on my left foot. I felt the need to write and express my thanks and gratitude for what was a faultless experience. The staff on Ward 5 were extremely professional, caring and on top of what was a hectic and busy ward. I would like to thank Regina who was wonderfully caring and attentive to all patients' needs. I know this may sound trite but she remembered every patient's first names and that made me feel that she cared. I heard a number of work ups on other patients in the ward area by different members of staff and I was just so impressed with the professionalism. I was escorted to theatre (which was a long walk away for someone with foot problems) by a nurse called Sue Tinnion. She was an absolute star, I felt a real sense of confidence in the care I received because of her positive attitude and supportive approach. Sue is an absolute asset to the NHS and what I would describe as a proper nurse. The theatre staff were wonderful, calm and confident in their abilities which put me at ease. I have had a few operations and Mr Mann, his registrar and the Anaesthetist were by far the most professional and confidence inspiring I have experienced. Mr Mann is a real character who obviously cares about his patients and I feel extremely safe and valued in his care. Kind regards and many thanks.”

BRI Mr E of Bradford:

“The best, however, I reserve until last. I was admitted under the care of Mr Mann, Orthopaedic Consultant, and his team. Never before have I met such dedicated, professional, courteous and knowledgeable people, especially Mr Mann and his Senior Registrar Mr Jain. In my own professional career in teaching I tried to achieve these qualities but these gentlemen have it all off to a tee. Mr Mann ensured that I received the very best of attention, as I assume he does with all of his patients. He is a gentleman of great integrity with rare traits in modern society, in that he is honest, straightforward, true to his word and always fulfills his promises. To complete the set he also listens carefully to his patient's concerns, then uses his own communication skills in exemplary fashion. Mr Mann also found that I had other problems apart from the broken leg and has ensured that I receive the correct treatment for these other ailments. I first met Mr Jain in the plaster room in A & E where he took charge in helping set my leg in its cast. He visited me regularly, with and without Mr Mann to check on my welfare and progress, eventually being a member of the surgical team which operated on my fractured leg, with marvellous results I must add. All praise must be given to Mr Mann and his team and I commend that the marvellous work and effort that they perform at BRI should be brought to your attention and to the attention of the Board of Governors of the NHS Foundation Trust which oversees the Bradford Teaching Hospitals. I would also be grateful if you would pass on to all personnel mentioned in this letter my most sincere thanks for all their efforts and help shown towards me. Please also continue to uphold the standards I have seen and known in your role as Chief Executive Officer for these hospitals.”
